China has experienced several Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases five years after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many news headlines and social media posts suggest the virus is spreading nationwide. The large number of patients may overload hospitals and crematoriums. Videos on the internet show very busy hospitals. The rise in respiratory illnesses is attributed to Influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19.
HMPV cases have increased in abrupt deaths, particularly in 40-80-year-olds, reports said.

What does HMPV mean?
HMPV was identified in 2001. Respiratory Syncytial Virus is its relative. Serological studies, on the other hand, show that the virus has been found in people for more than 60 years and is spread worldwide.
HMPV virus can cause upper and lower respiratory illnesses in people of all ages. People with weak immune systems, small children, and older people are particularly susceptible.
Cough, fever, stuffy nose, and shortness of breath are common symptoms, according to the CDC.
The head doctor at Beijing You’an Hospital, Li Tongzeng, said respiratory droplets and direct contact, such as shaking hands or touching infected items, might spread HMPV. The infection spreads in three to five days.

Antiviral medications shouldn’t cure HMPV, say experts. A Shanghai lung expert told the state-run National Business Daily that patients shouldn’t take antiviral treatments without knowing more about the virus because there is no vaccine, and its symptoms resemble colds.
